In 1990, IEM became one of the 66 research institutions of the Romanian Academy, being part of the National Institute for Economic Research. IEM was declared centre of excellence of The Romanian Academy and institutional information point for elaboration of projects under FP6 and FP7.
From 2005, The Institute for World Economy (IEM) is known by the European Commission Delegation in Romania as a multiplier of European integration information and is part of “NETWORKING EUROPE”.
IEM is a basic research institute, elaborating studies regarding the impact of the main issues in European and world economy. The general objective is to create scientific knowledge to be used in elaborating adequate solutions to the contemporary problems arising in the Romanian economy.
From 1990, the research objectives at IEM were focused on supporting the Romanian transition process towards a functional market and integration in the European and world economy.
In the year 2000, IEM established a Centre of Excellence for European Studies, recognized and supported by European Commission on the basis of a PHARE Project. The activities of the Centre- research, information, consulting and education- are focused on Internal Market and Competition policies in the EU and Romania.
